Physiological closed-loop ventilation systems: Past and present


A publication from the Helmholtz Institute for Biomedical Engineering and the Charité in Berlin reviews the evolution of physiological closed-loop ventilation systems and the current status.

The authors start with the very first application back in the 1950’s and move through subsequent developments, citing INTELLiVENT®-ASV® as one of today’s highly automated systems. The authors review the evidence showing that these systems are associated with:

  • Patients spending more time in the target zone
  • A shorter duration of mechanical ventilation and weaning, with no strong effect on mortality
  • A lower number of interventions by clinical staff

The authors note the significance of these systems in today’s critical care environment. Projections of a shrinking workforce combined with the time, effort and training needed to set a ventilator correctly could make it extremely difficult and costly to deliver personalized patient care in future. With all the research done in the field of artificial intelligence and the increasing amount of commercially available systems, the authors conclude that the dawn of physiological closed-loop ventilation has arrived.
