Airway closure is a frequent occurrence in obese patients during anesthesia and may be exacerbated by surgical pneumoperitoneum.
Researchers in Italy performed a study on 50 morbidly obese adult patients undergoing gynecological laparoscopic and/or robot-assisted surgery to investigate the effect of pneumoperitoneum combined with the Trendelenburg position. This Journal Club presentation available below looks at the individual aspects - airway closure, surgical pneumoperitoneum, and obesity – before reviewing the main results and conclusions to be drawn from the study.
