Improved cuff pressure management
The leakage of oral secretions past the endotracheal tube (ETT) is a causative risk factor in the development of ventilator associated pneumonia (VAP), and excessive cuff pressure is a risk factor in tracheal injuries. Existing solutions for endotracheal tube cuff pressure management require manual monitoring and adjustment of cuff pressure, which is a critical aspect ofthe ICU staff workload. It has been shown that up to eight manual adjustments of cuff pressure are required daily to maintain recommended cuff pressure ranges (Sole 2011).

We use IntelliCuff as a standard feature to prevent VAP in mechanically ventilated patients. IntelliCuff controls the cuff pressure automatically and regularly. This is a great help for us caregivers since we don’t have to check the cuff pressure manually every hour.
Recent clinical studies show that :
- Continuous cuff pressure control can decrease microaspiration and VAP (Lorente 2014, Nsei 2011).
- Continuous control is more effective in maintaining cuff pressure within an optimal range (Sole 2011).
How IntelliCuff works
The clinician sets the target pressure relative to the peak airway pressure, as well as minimum and maximum values. IntelliCuff automatically adjusts the cuff pressure within these ranges. To always be on the safe side, the pressure never exceeds 50 cmH2O. The pressure measured in the cuff at the end of exhalation (Pcuff) is displayed on the ventilator.
In the event of a damaged cuff, the device generates an alarm while simultaneously increasing the pressure, attempting to maintain the desired cuff pressure.
