An ineffective patient effort. This is indicated by the decrease in baseline airway pressure on the pressure waveform and the increase in expiratory flow on the flow waveform. If an esophageal pressure waveform is displayed on the ventilator as well, an ineffective patient effort can also be seen from the decrease in pleural pressure on this waveform (as shown below).
